The "Fleet of the Year" award is presented once a year to the trucking company with the lowest physical damage loss ratio. The purpose of the award is to promote safety and efficiency amongst trucking companies and their owner operators.
"It is an honor to present this award to Freeport Transport. They have been a customer of 1st Guard since 1986 and it has always been a pleasure doing business with them," stated Ed Campbell III, Chairman of 1st Guard Corporation. "Don Smetanick [President of Freeport Transport] is a great businessman and a great friend. There is no one more deserving of this award than Freeport Transport," added Campbell.
Freeport Transport has quite an eventful history in the transportation industry. Founded by Andy Smetanick, Don's father, the company prospered throughout the 1970's only to come head to head with the teamsters towards the end of the decade. Freeport Transport prevailed against the Teamsters organizing effort and continued to prosper in the 80's and 90's under Don Smetanick's leadership.
